5 Shocking Things We Can See Happen At SummerSlam 2023 (& 5 That Have No Chance Of Happening)

Publish date: 2024-06-13

SummerSlam 2023 is fast approaching, and with it being one of WWE’s big four, there are certainly big expectations attached to the event. Over the course of SummerSlam’s history, there have been major upsets, big returns, and both babyface and heel turns. Fans should expect to see at least some shocking things take place at this year’s show, particularly with recent PPVs offering up plenty of big moments.

When looking forward to the event, there are some more likely scenarios than others. Some shocking occurrences do actually have a strong chance of happening, whereas there are others where it feels like a zero perfect chance.

10 Can See Happen: Iyo Sky Cashes In Money In The Bank (And Bayley Turns On Her)

Iyo Sky has already been teasing a cash-in of her Money in the Bank briefcase, meaning that it could happen as soon as SummerSlam if the opportunity arises. Asuka vs. Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair could end up with a knackered champion, and there is a strong chance that Sky tries to cash in.

There could be another level to this though, as Bayley may very well prevent her from cashing in, cost her the match upon an attempt, or even attack her after a successful Women’s Championship win. The seeds have been planted already, so we can see this happening.

9 No Chance: Edge Retiring

Although there has been a lot of talk on Edge retiring this year, if it were to happen at SummerSlam it would have been built up by now. Edge has no rivalry to speak of and hasn’t consistently been on TV.

A retirement match at SummerSlam would be a big deal, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone on the right level to step up who is free from other storylines. Don’t expect to see him ride off into the distance just yet.

8 Can See Happen: Randy Orton Return

Randy Orton’s return could happen at any point. Talk of his comeback has been pretty quiet aside from the odd rumor here and there, but many were anticipating a comeback at Money in the Bank.

This didn’t happen, so the next port of call could be SummerSlam. The last few editions of SummerSlam have seen some big returns, and Orton fits the bill for a major comeback this year.

7 No Chance: Dustin Rhodes Cameo

Fans have talked of Dustin Rhodes's appearance in WWE to help the personal aspect of a Cody Rhodes feud. However, with AEW and WWE failing to even come to terms with an appearance for Billy Gunn on Raw, this is highly unlikely.

It would be a shock to see Cody’s brother appear at SummerSlam to be attacked by Brock Lesnar, and it is one that is a near certainty in not taking place.

6 Can See Happen: DIY Reunion

If reports from the likes of WRKD Wrestling on Twitter are to be believed, a DIY reunion in WWE is imminent. Hosting a reunion at SummerSlam could well take place, especially if WWE decides to put forth an impromptu edition of MizTV.

The Miz has been used for big returns and moments over the last year, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him used again as a punching back for a big moment such as this between Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano.

5 No Chance: Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship Streak Ending

Gunther has surpassed 400 days as Intercontinental Champion, coming incredibly close to the Honky Tonk Man’s all-time record reign. To lose the title at this stage would be a huge shock, and even though Drew McIntyre has just returned from an absence, he still has a low chance of winning the gold.

After all the work WWE has done to keep Gunther strong, putting the gold on a pre-established name in the last year of his contract would be a big mistake.

4 Can See Happen: Damian Priest Cashes In Money In The Bank (On Finn Balor)

Damian Priest cashing in his Money in the Bank contract and winning the World Heavyweight Championship would be shocking in itself, but doing so on his Judgment Day ally Finn Balor could well happen at SummerSlam.

Balor winning a title at SummerSlam only to lose it quickly once again would be poetic, and it would add a lot of tension into the Judgment Day faction and story, something which has been building over the last month or so.

3 No Chance: New Day Return

The New Day haven’t been together on-screen for quite some time, and whilst a reunion and return would be a great moment, there still doesn’t seem to be any news on a timeframe for a Big E comeback.

Additionally, the New Day hasn’t looked like a priority act under Triple H’s creative rule, and to use a stage such as SummerSlam to bring them back doesn’t feel like something he would book, even despite their talents and popularity.

2 Can See Happen: Jimmy Uso Turning On Jey Uso

Whilst this would be incredibly frustrating, Jimmy Uso giving in to Roman Reigns following his time away after being injured and turning his back on his twin brother could well happen at SummerSlam.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani of BT Sport recently, The Usos did mention that a singles match is something they’d be interested in, and this could take place sooner rather than later.

1 No Chance: The Rock Confronting Roman Reigns

With the writer’s strike putting a halt to Hollywood, it could open up The Rock’s schedule for a WWE return, even if it's brief. There will always be some rumor or hope of The Rock challenging Roman Reigns for the right to be Tribal Chief, but don’t expect this to happen at SummerSlam.

It would create headlines for sure, but The Rock doesn’t seem overly interested in a return to the ring, even for one more match with Roman Reigns. The most fans should hope for is a cameo on the Grayson Waller Effect.
