Wayne State University football player Brady Hessbrook committed suicide and passed away.

Our deepest condolences go out to Mr. and Mrs. Hessbrook on the loss of their son Brady on Friday.

That bright grin of Brady’s was like a breath of fresh air. Brightening up a place was something he was naturally good at.

His burial is scheduled on this coming Friday, thus there will be no classes in the Ithaca City School District.

Brady Hessbrook Biography

Since 2007 Terry Hessbrook and the rest of the Ithaca Community has taken me under their wing and has made me one of their own.
When Randy Miniard and I put the reality in motion of and made High School Sports Scene a reality in 2009 there was this little guy roaming the sidelines of the football field following coach Hessbrook’s every move. That little guy was Brady. Brady’s smile was a breath of fresh air. He always knew how to brighten up a room.
From 2010-2018 during Ithaca’s run to dominance that saw the Yellowjackets win state titles and two runner-up championships It was Brady that was there every step of the way. Brady waited his turn got his chance to lead the Yellowjackets and fulfilled a lifelong dream playing for his dad and his uncle Todd.
Brady was a 4-year starter and captain. He led the Yellowjackets to four straight playoff appearances, and one state runner-up finish. It didn’t come easy — he had a torn ACL injury in his knee and played with a separated shoulder along the way.
Every time I would see the kid he was working hard to getting himself ready to get back on the field.
Through months of rehab, he threw for 2,020 yards his senior season with 30 touchdowns in just eight games, and he became the Associated Press Division 7/8 Player of the Year. He had 14 college offers, but Wayne State felt right.
It brings sadness to me and the rest of the Ithaca Community that Brady’s life journey ended unexpectedly Friday afternoon. As I am writing this with tears running down my face I can’t believe what has transpired over the last 24 hours.
Brady was just 20-years old with a whole life in front of him. Brady was a true student-athlete every step of the way. He was a true student of the game. I don’t know how else to describe the boy that I met 15-years ago.
The names that came before him were a whose who of high school football over the last decade. Alex Niznak, David Brown, Travis Smith, Jake Smith, Peyton Smith, Joey Bentley. These were just the quarterbacks that came before him.
Brady wasn’t phased at all. He left his legacy on Ithaca Football just like the others that followed him.
Now we are faced with the agony of not seeing that smile light up the Ithaca football field on a Friday night.
As a community Ithaca is suffering. We are all suffering, but let me say remember the good times. Remember the kid that went all out on the football field. The kid that wore his heart on his sleeve. The fierce competitor on the football field, but also the one guy that you could rely on when times are tough.
Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
Brady we miss you bud. It is great sadness that we have to write this. No one can put agony into words. Just remember we love you my friend.
This isn’t the end, but just the beginning. Fly high.

Brady Hesstbrook Funeral Arrangement

Mr. and Mrs. Hessbrook’s son Brady passed away unexpectedly on Friday. Ithaca Public Schools has a support plan prepared for students and staff on Monday morning. The Gratiot Integrated Health Network Professionals and several Local Youth Leaders will be available for students and staff.

Funeral arrangements have been made for this upcoming Friday; Ithaca Public Schools will be closed that day.
