'ER' Cast Then and Now: See Photos of George Clooney and More

Publish date: 2024-06-17

For 15 years, ER ruled the airwaves as it followed the drama-filled lives of doctors working at the fictional County General Hospital based in Chicago. It’s been more than a decade since the Michael Crichton-created series ended after 15 seasons in April 2009, and George Clooney, Julianna Margulies and the rest of the cast look a little different now compared to back then.

Though ER‘s 331st and final episode premiered 12 years ago, the 22-time Emmy-winning show left an undeniable legacy in TV history. “People talk about numbers when you talk about American Idol or whatever the big one is — 16, 17 million people,” George, who portrayed Doug Ross, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2011. “We were averaging 40 million people at 10 o’clock at night with an hour show.”

The Ocean’s Eleven actor had a blast at the time, noting ER was a career-altering gig. “That made a huge difference in my career. It really changed things,” he told THR, echoing his sentiments to Fox News in 2019. “There were six of us who were thrown into the stratosphere … it was life-changing for all of us.”

Julianna, who played the role of Carol Hathaway, also had a memorable time filming the beloved series. While chatting with People in April 2021, the Good Wife actress credited George for creating “an environment that people feel safe in.”

“I followed and watched how he conducted himself on the set. I felt so safe with him,” she told the outlet, noting their on-screen romance was the product of real-life chemistry. “That can’t happen if you don’t have a crush on each other,” Julianna shared. “And with George and me, it was so organic. I was just supposed to be a guest star, number 39 on the call sheet. But he treated everyone the same.”

A spin-off of ER has yet to be put in the works, and fans certainly miss seeing George, Julianna and the rest of the iconic cast on their TV screens. Fortunately, the stars reunited for a special Earth Day episode of Stars in the House, the YouTube series that benefits The Actors Fund.

According to Deadline, the ER reunion episode — which aired in April 2021 — featured George, Julianna and other cast members including, Anthony Edwards, Noah Wyle, Sherry Stringfield, Eriq La Salle and Gloria Reuben. The virtual reunion steamed on People’s social platforms, PeopleTV. At the time, Gloria said she was “grateful” to reunite with her costars. “I am absolutely thrilled to be reuniting with my ER family,” she gushed to Deadline.
