While his birthday may fall on the weekend, the federal holiday is always marked on the third Monday of every January.

The answer is yes and no depending on the city, county or state you are based in. Some counties and states are observing Martin Luther King Day 2023 and there will be no trash or recycling pickup as a result.

In observance of the public holiday, some residents across the US won’t receive garbage, recycling, or yard waste services, a number of county offices have confirmed.

Garbage services that are affected on MLK Day

The City of Tampa offices will be closed on Monday, January 16 and there will be no garbage, recycling or composting pickup. Regular residential trash and recycling services will resume on Tuesday, January 17.

The New York City Department of Sanitation has confirmed that there will be no trash or recycling pickup on Monday too. Residents who normally receive services on Monday can place their trash on Monday night for collection on Tuesday.

There will be no garbage pickup in the Philly area on Monday either and collections will resume the following business day. For more information if you are based in the area, please visit phila.gov.

Indiana’s Marion County has modified garbage collection in observance of the federal holiday as well. There will be no collection on Monday and all trash pickups for the week of January 16-January 22 will be delayed by one business day.

Is the post office open on MLK Day 2023?

No, the post office is closed on MLK Day 2023 and there will be no mail delivery on Monday, January 16. Mail delivery will resume to normal on Tuesday.

Most FedEx services, including FedEx Home Delivery, FedEx Freight and FedEx Express, are operating but some offices have modified working hours on Monday.

UPS is also working on MLK Day. As per its website: “UPS pickup and delivery services are available. Note: UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries will require one additional business days’ time in transit due to the Federal (USPS) holiday.”
