John William Coltrane, well known by his stage name “Trane,” was an American jazz saxophonist and composer who lived from September 23, 1926 until July 17, 196Early in his career, Coltrane worked in the bebop and hard bop idioms, and he was a pioneer in the usage of modes in jazz. Later in his career, he was at the vanguard of free jazz. His career as a leader included at least fifty recording sessions; he also featured as a sideman on many more recordings, including collaborations with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk, to name a few of examples. Throughout his career, Coltrane and his music developed a more spiritual component that was reflected in his lyrics. Their son Ravi Coltrane is also a saxophonist, and his second wife was the musician Alice Coltrane; they had two children together. Coltrane inspired a countless number of artists, and he is still regarded as one of the most important saxophonists in the history of music. In the wake of his death, he was honoured with a slew of accolades and honours, including canonization by the African Orthodox Church as Saint John William Coltrane and the awarding of a special Pulitzer Prize in 2007.
