See The Enterprise D Flying Over Times Square To Promote Star Trek: Picard
The Enterprise-D appeared above New York as part of promotion for Star Trek: Picard.
The iconic Star Trek vessel the U.S.S. Enterprise-D returned to television in the recent penultimate episode of Star Trek: Picard “Vox,” and as part of the promotional push for the show, it appeared in real life too. As seen in the Twitter post below from co-showrunner Terry Matalas, the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation appeared at New York City’s Times Square to deafening fan applause and, we’ll admit, it does us all good to see Starfleet’s finest starship back in action.
Although the Enterprise-D was destroyed all the way back in 1994’s feature film Star Trek Generations above the planet Veridian III in a battle with the Klingon Duras’ sisters Lursa and B’Etor, it turns out Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) spent years secretly reconstructing his former spacecraft. This off-the-books hobby of the head of the Starfleet Fleet Museum becomes a crucial plot point in Star Trek: Picard’s most recent (and reportedly final) season, as the rebuilt Enterprise is the only remaining Starfleet vessel to be unaffected by a Borg/Changeling virus.
Whether it is above Time Square or soaring back into action to combat the Federation’s greatest enemies, the Enterprise-D is always a sight to behold. After the destruction of TNG’s most famous ship in Generations, the Starfleet flagship has been replaced by two new models so far. The Enterprise-F (an Odyssey-class ship that first appeared in the non-canonical MMORPG Star Trek: Online) recently showed up in Picard, but it does not seem like things are going too well for the shiny new ship.
The Sovereign-class Enterprise-E has apparently already been destroyed at some point in the past, having not been seen since the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. A seemingly offhand joke in Picard suggested that the ship was destroyed due to its commanding officer at the time, Worf (Michael Dorn), but it is unclear exactly what actually happened.
The Enterprise advertisement for Picard really hits the ol’ nostalgia feels, which has been par for the course of the show as a whole. Over the course of the series’ three seasons, we have seen a whole procession of familiar faces and sights from TNG, with the third set of episodes essentially becoming a full-on reunion of the franchise’s most beloved show. While we did make an accurate call on who the new captain of the Enterprise-F was, we certainly didn’t guess we were going to see our favorite ship back on the screen.
Or, in this case, floating above the world’s most famous town square to the raucous cheers of New York Trekkies. Even if this is the swansong for the TNG crew, we’re glad we got to have one last go-around with the Enterprise.
