What Happened To Kelly Mason In My 600-Pound Life?
Kelly died while her My 600-lb life season was still airing, despite her best efforts. Kelly had type II diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, thyroid problems, a blood clot in her leg also a pulmonary embolism, and heart problems. In February 2019, she died from cardiac arrest a few days before her 42nd birthday.

It was a sad day for My 600-pound Life viewers; even Dr. Now was moved by her death. He noted that her death was caused not by the resumption of her previous eating habits but by the damage her weight had done to her heart. Kelly is one of two people who died while appearing on the show.

I was still very hopeful that we would be able to get her out of her state of heart failure so I'm very saddened to hear this news. At Kelly's last appointment with me a few weeks ago, her weight loss was on track, so this is not a result of her going back to her old habits. She was working hard and doing what she needed but despite that, the damage to her heart up to this point was just too severe. Even though I didn't know you personally, you touched my life with your story. Fly strong, Kelly."

When Kelly and I meet with Dr. Now for the first time, he lists all the severe health issues her weight is causing. Kelly has diabetes, high blood pressure, a blood clot in her leg, a pulmonary embolism, reflux, thyroid issues, and arthritis, to name a few ailments.

She'd also been in the hospital recently for congestive heart failure and shortness of breath. Kelly is eventually approved for weight loss surgery after losing 220 pounds from her starting weight. She maintains her weight-loss commitment even after her surgery, at which point she has lost a total of 324 pounds.
"It feels like the first day of a new life, actually," she says in an emotional voiceover when she's being discharged. "My plan is to stick to the diet, do physical therapy, occupational therapy, to walk in the neighborhood. To do what Dr. Now expects me to do. But with my heart not functioning the way it's supposed to, this breath could be my last breath. But I don't want to die."
